I have seen some others here on the site that struggles with the same problem. This is a known problem around the community with Pro Tools 12.3 and up on El Capitan Macs and is a major inconvenience when working. I haven't tested it yet, but it looks promising. I know that my mid 2014 Macbook Pro with Intel i5 and 8GB of ram is plenty of enough to run audio playback and simple plugin mixing. This is the advice i've got from Waves tech support.
